EZEKIEL CHAPTER 26
On February 3, during the 12th year of King Jehoiachin's captivity, a message came to Ezekiel from the Lord. It said that Tyre had rejoiced over the fall of Jerusalem and claimed it would now be wealthy from Jerusalem's downfall.
The Lord said he was now Tyre's enemy and would bring nations against it and destroy it's walls and scrape away its's soil and make it a bare rock, totally inhabitable. Then the Lord said he would bring King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to destroy Tyre and he would have a siege against the city and his calvary would break down the walls and butcher the people and plunder all riches.
The Lord said the coastline would tremble as Tyre fell and the seaport rulers would wail for her and sing a funeral song( see verses 15-18). For the Lord would make Tyre an unhabited ruin and it would sink beneath the sea and remain buried beneath the earth.
BIBLE NOTES SHOW: Tyre was the capital of Phoenicia, just north of Israel. Part of the city was on the coastline and part was a beautiful island. Tyre dominated the sea trading routes, while Judah dominated the land caravan routes. It took Nebuchadnzzar 15 years to capture Tyre because the city's backside lay on the sea so fresh supplies could be shipped in daily. The actual damage done to the island settlement would come later when Alexander the Great threw the rubble of the mainland into the sea until it made a bridge to the island. Today the island city is a pile of rubble.
HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? We see in this chapter another example of God's wrath toward those who rejoiced over the fall of his city Jerusalem. Tyre's naval power didn't have a chance against the power and might of God. And God completely obliterated it.
Can you imagine this is the same God who could raise up citizens to follow him? Can you imagine this is the same God who could forgive and grace people with mercy? It just goes to show that he was furios by what evils and sinning he saw. Do you think he will be angered by what evils and sinning he sees in our world. Scares me. Doesn't it scare you? The very thought of such power reigning down on our world today is frightening. But we must remember that since the time of Tyre, the Lord's son was born who brought peace, mercy and foregiveness to us all. Praise the name of Jesus Christ!
Yours in faith,
Mary
