Descendants of Ephraim and Asher

I Chronicles Chapter 7

The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puah, Jashub and Shimron. Their geneology is listed in verses 2 through 5.

The descendants of Benjamin are found in verses 6 though 12.

The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, Shillem and were all descendants of Jacob's wife Bilhah.

The descendants of Ephraim were Shuthelah, Bered, Tahath. Eleadah, Tahath, Zabad, and Shuthelah. Remembr that Ephraim's sons Ezer and Elead were killed trying to steal livestock from farmers near Gath. Their father mourned a long time and afterward slept with his wife and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Ephraim named him Beriah(meaning "tragedy" or "misfortune"). Ephraim's descendants lived near Bethel. Along the border of Manasseh were villages in which Joseph son of Israel (Jacob) lived.

The descendants of Asher are listed in verses 30 through 39. Each of these descendants was head of an ancestral clan. All were skilled warriors and prominent leaders.

BIBLE NOTES SHOW: Joshua, one of Israel's great leaders is listed in the line of Ephraim.

HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? This chapter is another example of the importance of geneology. These people acknowledged the importance and were determined to keep their lineage known from generation to generation. We all need to know where we came from. Have you started your own research into your family yet?

The way the ancients chose names for their children was unusual for us today. Most of us have Anglo-Saxon names, except for Native Americans and Afro Americans who tailor their names to fit the child. The Israelites picked words to describe their child and often used emotional words, such as in the case of Beriah, Ephraim's son. Sometimes we find it hard to live up to our names, but with God's help and prayer we can do and be anything he wants.

Yours in Christ,
Mary
