Adulterous two sisters

Ezekiel Chapter 23

In this chapter God compares the sinful countries to two sisters. These girls became prostitutes in Egypt. One was named Oholah and the other named Oholibah. God was speaking of Samaria and Jerusalem.

Oholah gave her love to the Assyrians and so she worshipped their idols and defiled herself. But she did not leave her prostitution behind. So God handed her over to her Assyrian lovers and they stripped her and killed her and took away her children as slaves.

And though her sister Oholibah saw her sister's treatment, she followed in her footsteps and was even more depraved. She abandoned herself to prostitution and but carried it even farther. She fell in love with pictures painted on the walls, of military officers from Babylonia. So she sent messages to them inviting them to come to her and they came and committed adultery with her. So God was disgusted with her and he judged her by sending her lovers against her. And all the handsome military men prepared for battle and God would hand her over. He would cut off her nose and ears and her children would be captives and she would never again long for things from her time in Egypt.

The Lord said he would hand her over to those she loathed and the shame of prostitution would be exposed to the world. she would drink from the same cup of terror as her sister and the world would mock her. Then the Lord told Ezekiel of the adultery and murder of the sisters and how they defiled his Temple and violated his Sabbath day. But the righteous people would judge the sister cities for what they were and sentence them to all the punishment they deserve.

BIBLE NOTES SHOW: Oholah meant "her tent", Oholibah meant "my tent is in her".

HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? God used the story of the two evil sisters to humanize the sins that were committed. In this chapter he predicts the last attack on Jerusalem. He tells of the sacrifice of children to idols and the mockery of worship. Look about you and see if there are any evil sister countries on your horizon. The things that happen outside our boundaries are just as cruel as the things that happened in the Bible. And if we choose to look away, then we are just as guilty as the sisters in the story.

Yours in Christ,
Mary
