Descendants of Adam thru Isaac

As a genealogist, I know the importance of a family record. Chronicles gives us the genealogy of the nation of Israel. But I know that you will grow uninterested in reading a list of descendants. So I will do my best to hit the high points and skip some of the many names. It will be up to you to keep up with the family trees on your own.

I Chronicles Chapter 1

The descendants of Adam were Seth, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech and Noah. Noah's sons were Shem, Ham and Japheth. Verses 5 thru 24 list the descendants of Japeth, Ham, and Shem. With the name Abram listed , later known as Abraham.

Verses 28 thru 53 list the sons of Abraham -Ishmael and Isaac.
Isaac's sons were Essau and Israel and their descendants are listed in verses 35-37. The people of Edom had sons listed in verses 38 thru 53 and included the ruling kings when there were kings in Israel.

BIBLE NOTES SHOW: The record of names demonstrates that God is interested in not only nations, but also in individuals. God knows every face and name and some were special whom God loved.

The long list of names was complied after the people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon. The exiles biggest fear was that the records of their heritage would be lost and they wanted to be able to prove their descent from Abraham. The list constructed for Judah and Israel served as proof for those who claimed to be Abraham's descendants.

Why is the information given regarding Edom? Essau, Isaac's oldest son was a direct descendant of Abraham and as Abraham's grandson he deserved a place in Jewish records. It was through his marriage to pagan women, that the kingdom of Edom began.

HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? God wants us to know and love him and he recognizes our uniqueness as individuals and our solidarity with the rest of the his family. This long genealogy holds great importance for us today because it supports the Old Testament promise that Jesus the Messiah would be a descendant of Abraham and David. And we all know that God kept his promise and our Savior was born through the house of David.

My niece Suzanne who was in a terrible car accident and is in the hospital with many broken bones. Pray for her healing. Also Gabe, Wanda, Janice Long’s parents. especially her mother whose cancer has returned, and Arlene’s nephew David. Pray for my neighbor Al who is nearing the end of his life. Pray for Carolyn’s brother Ronald who has cancer. Pray for our friend Michelle who was diagnosed with MS. Pray for Cyndi Sullivan who was given 14 months to live with cancer, but has made it six years. The pain has returned and she needs our prayers.
UPDATE on Barb who went in for back surgery and had a heart attack and stroke, she has 90 percent of her speech back and is home , but continues to have a problem with one arm and hand. She will require long therapy and insurance may soon be a problem since her job was not held for her.
Pray for Robert Sargent with lung cancer and Marthaline Sargent with serious health issues..
Pray for Carolyn’s friend Margaret and her husband who were in a car accident. As elderly drivers they may face a life change which may cost them their independence. Let’s all raise our voices to God to hear our prayers.
Pray for the speedy recovery of Sandy in Minnesota who underwent successful brain surgery for a tumor recently.
