LAMENTATIONS CHAPTER 2
Jeremiah is talking about the anger God showed over Jerusalem. His fury was awesome and he showed no mercy even to his Temple. In his anger he broke down the walls and brought to dust the kingdom and all its rulers.
The Lord withdrew his protection of Israel as their enemy attacked. He bends his brow against his people as though he were their enemy. His strength and his fury are poured out like fire on the city. While he destoyed his own sanctuary, he brought unending tears to Jerusalem. He blotted out all memory of the holy festivals and Sabbath days.
Jeremiah tells how he cried until tears would no longer come. The city gates had sunk into the ground and all the locks and bars were destroyed, the kings had been exiled to distant lands and there was no more law Prophets received no more visions from the Lord. He sees little children and tiny babies of Jerusalem faint and die in the streets. He sees no way he can comfort everyone.
Jeremiah urges the people to cry aloud before the Lord. And let their tears flow like a river. He says for them to rise during the night and cry out, pour their hearts like water to the Lord. Lift up your hands in prayer, he pleads. Pray and plead for the children, he says.
BIBLE NOTES SHOW: The Temple was God's represented God's presence with the people. It's destruction mean he no longer lived there.
HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? It is important to get a lesson from this chapter - that our place of worship is not nearly as important to God as our pattern of worship. A church building may be beautiful, but it can decay from within. the people of Judah turned their worship into a mocking lie.
When you worship are you saying words you don't really mean? We must earnestly seek God for a fresh vision of his love and care.
Jeremiah cried. Yet there is no shame in crying. His tears were sincere and full of compassion. And we should be moved in our time, when we see moral decay around us.
Yours in Christ,
Mary
