Lamentations Chapter 4
Jeremiah speaks now of God's anger being satisfied. The children of Jerusalem are treated like pots of clay and the jackals feed their young, but not the people of Israel. Their children's cries are ignored and their parched tongues stick to the roofs of their mouth and they cry for bread.
Peope who were once rich, now beg in the streets. Those who lived in palaces now search in garbage pits for food. The guilt of the people is greater than Sodom. Princes who once glowed with health now have faces blacker than soot and they waste away. Tenderhearted women cooked their own children and eat them in order to survive the seige.
But now the anger of the Lord is satisfied. His anger has been poured out and all because of the sins of the prophets and priests who shed innocent blood. So many ran to distant lands but were not allowed to stay. Those who stayed could not go into the streets without danger. Their enemies were swifter than eagles and if anyone fled to the mountains, they found them. So are you rejoicing oh land of Edom? For you too must drink from the cup of the Lord's anger. Jerusalem your punishment will end and you will soon return from exile.
BIBLE NOTES SHOW: When a city was under seige, the city wall of protection actually sealed them inside. They could not get out for food or water. Jerusalem was under seige for two years and life became so harsh that people ate their own children and dead bodies littered the streets.
Edom was Judah's archenemy and assisted Babylon in the seige of Jerusalem.
HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? We are a prosperous nation and we need to be careful not to assume that life will always go well. To glory in prosperity is not a good thing and we can also fall into spiritual bankruptcy, just like Jerusalem did. Hard to believe so many priests and prophets did evil. I have always thought of them as pure in their religion. Guess it goes to show that even they can be corrupted.
The scarry part of this chapter is that the people continued to call upon the King for help. Instead of calling upon God. They chose to do this instead of following the directives God was giving them through Jeremiah. How sad. I hope in times of great trouble we can maintain our faith and follow our Lord.
Yours in Christ,
Mary
