The Lord lays out his destruction plan

JEREMIAH    CHAPTER 49

The message the Lord gave to Jeremiah concerning the Ammonites was that they would be punished for their worship of Molech and he would destroy the city of Rabbah and all neighboring towns would be burned. So Israel could come back and take back the land the Ammonites took from her.

The message the Lord gave to Jeremiah concerning the Edomites was that they should flee for he would bring disaster upon Edom. And they would be punished and the land stripped bare. It's children, brothers and neighbors would all be destroyed and Edom would be no more. He would preserve the orphans and widows. Further the Lord said they must drink the cup of judgment for he swore that Bozrah would become a heap of rubble and all towns and villages desolate forever.

Jeremiah heard a message from the Lord that he asked other nations to form a battle prepared against Edom. And he would cut Edom down to size and it would be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

The Lord gave this message concerning Damascus and he said Damascus had become feeble and her people gripped with fear, turning to flee. But her young men would fall in the streets and die and all her warriors would be killed. The Lord would start a fire at the edge of Damascus to burn up the palaces of Ben-hadad.

The Lord gave this message concerning Kedar and kingdoms of Hazor and he said the Babylonians would kill the warriors and capture their household goods. The Lord said for the people to flee and hide in deep caves. Then he told the babylonians to go attack the nomadic tribes who lived in the desert. He said to scatter their camels and cattle. Hazor was to be inhabited by jackals and desolate forever.

The Lord gave this message concerning Elam, that he would destroy the archers of Elam and bring their enemies from all directions to scatter the Edomites. And they would be exiled to countries around the world. Ther enemies would chase them until they were destroyed completely. And the Lord would set his throne in Elam and destroy its kings and princes, but in later days, he would restore the fortunes of Elam.

BIBLE NOTES SHOW: The Ammontes were descendants of Lot through an incestuous relationship with one of his daughters, who were Moabites. The Israelites descended from Jacob and the Edomites descended from  his twin brother Essau, so both nations descended from their father Isaac. Dedan was a flourishing city that supported caravan travel.Bozrah was a town in northern Edom. Edom was in a rock fortress located in Petra, southern Jordan. Edom thought it was impenatrable. And finally Damascus was the captial of Aram, north of Israel. Kedar and Hazor were nomadic tribes. Elam was east of Babylon and became the nucleus of the Persian empire.

HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? How can a list of the destruction of so many countries relate to us? True, this all happened centuries ago, but it could happen again. Many of these same problems exist in the same areas today. We should learn from these events. We should be aware that the Lord bears only so much sin and depravity and then he takes action against it. Can these things happen in our own part of the world - yes! If our culture continues on the pathway to depravity, perhaps the Lord would see fit to end our society too. So it is our job to go out and be warriors for the Lord. Spread his word. Don't be afraid to stand up for what you believe in. Pray daily for guidance.
