Jeremiah Chapter 39
Two and a half years later, King Nebuchadnezzar and his army broke through the wall of Jereusalem and the city fell. King Zedekiah and his royal guard saw the Babylonians coming and fled by darkness of night. But the Babylonians chased the king and caught him and took him to Nebuchanezzar who made Zedekiah watch as he killed his sons and all the nobles of Judah. Then he gouged out Zedekiah's eyes, put him in chains and sent him in exile to Babylon.
Meanwhile, the city was burned, including the palace and the walls were torn down. Those left in the city were sent as exiles to Babylon and the few poor, he assigned to fields and vineyards to care for. He asked that Jeremiah be found and given anything he wanted. So Jeremiah stayed in Judah among his own people. And the Lord sent him the message to give to the Ethiopian, that he would send disaster and destruction, but the Ethiopian he would keep safe.
HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US IN TODAY'S WORLD?
Compare the king of Jerusalem and Jeremiah. Their differences are many: Zedekiah was imprisoned and Jeremiah was freed. Zedekiah was destroyed because of his fear while Jeremiah was treated with respect. Zedekiah was treated with contempt. Jeremiah was concerned for the people, Zedekiah was concerned only with himself.
Why should we care about these two men who lived hundreds of years ago? They are used as examples for us. Examples of what can happen if we do not show concern for others, but love ourselves. This chapter shows that the Lord does what he says he will do. We need to be mindful of the need to listen carefully when our Lord calls us.
Yours in Christ,
Mary
