Jeremiah is taken to Egypt

JEREMIAH       CHAPTER 43

Azariah and many other proud men said to Jeremiah that he was a liar. They challenged his claim that the Lord forbade them from going to Egypt. They were convinced that Baruch had told him to say that, and so they agreed to stay in Judah and be killed by the Babylonians.

But Johanan and all the army officers and all the people refused to obey the Lord's command to stay in Judah and they took with them all the people who had returned from nearby countries and in the crowd were all ages and the king's daughters and also Jeremiah and Baruch. They all got as far as the city of Tahpanhes, in Egypt.

Then the Lord gave another message to Jeremiah and he told that while the people of Judah watch, to bury large rocks between the pavement stones at the entrance of Pharaoah's place. Then God promised to bring King Nebuchadnezzar to Egypt and his throne would be set on the large stones that Jeremiah hid. Then he asked Jeremiah to tell all of this to the people of Judah, that Nebuchadnezzar would come and he would spread his royal canopy over the buried stones. And he would destroy the land of Egypt and burn the temples and idols and pick the land clean.

HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? Clearly the people were so badly frightened that they were even afraid to obey the Lord and instead they headed for Egypt. Perhaps they thought that God might spare them if they had Jeremiah with them.
When we forget a lesson or refuse to learn it, we risk repeating our mistakes. Like the people of Judah, failure to learn cost them dearly. We must never make this mistake in our times.

Yours in Christ,
Mary
