Captivity for 70 years

JEREMIAH     CHAPTER 25

In the year 605 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar came into power and Jehoiakim's reign was in its fourth year when God gave the message to Jeremiah. Jeremiah told the people that for nearly twenty-three years the Lord had been giving him messages to pass to the people. And each time, the people had not listened. Each time the Lord asked the people to turn from evil and he would let them live in the land given to their ancestors by God. But still they did not listen and made the Lord furious at their evil idol worship. So now the Lord had decided to gather king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and bring his armies to destroy the people of Israel. And as captives,  they would serve the king of Babylon for seventy years. Then, he would punish the king of Babylon and his people for their sins and make the country a wasteland and Babylon's people slaves.

Then the Lord said to Jeremiah to take a cup filled to the brim with anger and make all nations to whom he sent Jeremiah, to drink from it. So Jeremiah took the cup of anger and made all nations drink from it. Afterward, the Lord told Jeremiah to let the nations know that the Lord would roar loudly against his own land from his holy dwelling place in Heaven and he would judge all the people of the earth, slaughtering the wicked with his sword.

Further, the Lord said to look and see the disaster that would fall upon nation after nation because a great whirlwind of fury is rising from the distant corners of the earth. It would do no good to weep and moan, there will be no place to escape. Their land would be made desolate by the sword of the enemy and the Lord's fierce anger.

BIBLE NOTES SHOW: In verses  15-38 Jeremiah listed other wicked nations that would experience God's wrath at the hand of Babylon.

HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? Jeremiah preached the same message for 23 years and nobody would believe him. Imagine how he felt to be rejected by his fellow man over and over. But because he had committed himself to God, he never stopped. Just as God never stops loving us, even when we reject him.

When you talk to people about God, I hope that even if they respond in a negative fashion, that you remain faithful to God and continue to witness for him. To witness for our Lord is one of the most beautiful ways to show our service to him.

Yours in Christ,
Mary
