ISAIAH CHAPTER 60
In this chapter, the message that God sends to the people of Israel (through the prophet Isaiah) is one of glory for Jerusalem. All nations will come to see Jerusalem's light and mighty kings will travel to see its' radiance. God tells them that they will see their sons coming back from distant land and daughters carried home. The people of Jerusalem will thrill with joy as merchants from all around the world come and caravans will converge bringing gold and insense for the worship of the Lord.
The Lord sees the ships of Tarshish reserved to bring the people of Israel back home and bring their wealth with them to use to honor the Lord. Foreigners will come to rebuild cities in Israel and Kings and rulers will send aid. Because the Lord destroyed so much in anger, he will now have mercy on the land through his grace.
Those that refuse to be allies to the Israelites will be destroyed and their kings led as captives in a victory procession. The children of tormentors will bow before Israel and those who formerly despised Jerusalem will now call it City of the Lord, Zion of the Holy One of Israel. And the city will be a joy to all generations. Peace and righteousness will be in the leaders and violence will soon disappear in the land. Salvation will surround Jerusalem and God will be your everlasting light. All the people of Jerusalem will possess their land forever.
BIBLE NOTES SHOW: In verses 6 & 7, obscure tribes in the Arabian deserts hundreds of miles from Jerusalem are mentioned just to show that all people would come because God would be living in Jerusalem and they would be attracted to his light.
HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? In the first few paragraphs, God makes promises that his glory would shine upon you. Soon all the people on earth will recognize him as the one, true God. Sometimes we get discouraged when we don't see hordes of people turning to God. But he asks that we not get discouraged, that we be ready for his promises to come true.
We must be patient. As Christians, we are the heirs of this prophecy. Patience is a virtue and one we must have in order to see the fulfillment of prophecy. Use these promises as a basis, an anchor to hold onto your faith. The result will be untold joy!
Yours in Christ,
Mary
