ISAIAH CHAPTER 23
A message came to Isaiah concerning Tyre. It was a message to the Tyrian ships to weep for their harbor because it was gone. And because Tyre was gone, those left must mourn in silence. He tells the survivors to flee to Tarshish and wail.
Isaiah asks who brought this disaster upon Tyre, the chief trader of the world. The answer was the Lord Almighty, who did it to destroy their pride and show his contempt for all human greatness. He wants them to know that the Lord need only hold out his hand over the sea and he can shake the kingdoms of the earth. The Lord destroyed Sidon and the land of Babylonia. The Assyrians built siege ramps against its walls and tore down its palaces and turn it into a pile of rubble.
Now the Lords says that for 70 years, the length of a king's life, Tyre would be forgotten. But then the city would come back to life. But she would be no different than she was before and return to her evil ways. In the end, her businesses would be used to provide good good and fine clothing for the Lord's priests.
BIBLE NOTES SHOW: Egypt would experience great sorrow when Tyre fell because Tyre's shipping expertise carried their products around the world. So Egypt would lose an important partner.
HOW DOES THIS CHAPTER RELATE TO US TODAY? Just as God destroyed Tyre because its people were prideful, we in our time must remember not to do the same thing. Everything we have is because of the Creator and we have no reason to take pride in ourselves. This is a concept many successful people cannot understand. They forget that they work hard because the Lord allows it. They forget that their success is a result of God's plan, not their own. We all should be humbled before the Lord. Pray now and ask for his help in realizing how great and powerful is the Lord.
Yours in Christ,
Mary
