Towns given to the Levites

Joshua Chapter 21

The leaders of the tribe of Levi came to consult with Eleazar the priest, Joshua, and leaders of the other tribes. They spoke at Shiloh and claimed that the Lord had instructed Moses to give them towns to live in and pasturelands for cattle. So by the command of the Lord, the Levites were given towns with their pasturelands.

The other towns that were given are listed in verses 4-40. Please read the list for its importance to the tribes who occupied them.
The total number of towns and pasturelands with the Israelite territory given to the Levites came to forty-eight.

So the Lord gave to Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they conquered it and settled there. And the Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the Lord helped them conquer all their enemies. All of the good promises that the Lord had given Israel came true.

BIBLE NOTES SHOW that the Levites were to minister before God on behalf of all the people, so they were given cities scattered throughout the land. Although Jerusalem was far away from the homes of many Israelites, almost no one lived more than a day’s journey from the Levitical city.

God proved faithful in fulfilling every promise he had given to Israel. Fulfillment of some promises took several years, but all of the good promises that the Lord had given Israel came true. His promises will be fulfilled according to his timetable, not ours, but we know that his word is sure.

The more we learn of those promises God has fulfilled and continues to fulfill, the easier it is to hope for those yet to come. Sometimes we become impatient, wanting God to act in a certain way NOW. Instead, we should faithfully do what we know he wants us to do and trust him for the future.
